Job Description:
The Head Grower is a critical position that provides expertise and leadership aimed at helping Babel Farm achieve its organizational objectives. The Head Grower manages and leads staff of farmers engaged in the planting, care, cultivation, maintenance, and harvest of the company’s horticultural products that are produced for wholesale or retail sales.
The Head Grower directs the application of technical procedures, timing and metering devices that control frequency, amount, and type of nutrient applications; regulate humidity, ventilation, temperature, and amount of light; and dispense fertilizers. This individual directs and controls the growing operations to ensure optimum growth, quality, appearance, and health of plants. Monitors crop development and the removal of substandard plants to maintain quality standards.
The Head Grower shall keep records of the day-to-day operations. The Head Grower will also undertake the research and analysis of horticultural problems, providing advanced technical support to all greenhouse personnel and management. Other duties will be assigned, as necessary.

Responsibilities:
• Discusses plant growing activities with management personnel to plan for growing activities that are consistent with planned production schedules.
• Plan and direct the tasks of the growing team ensuring that all work is appropriately prioritized and completed in a timely manner.
• Manage and plan for space allocation based on production reports and sowing schedules.
• Monitors growing conditions and oversees changes in humidity, moisture and temperature and cultivation procedures to ensure conformance with quality control standards.
• Monitor water management, culturing issues, fertilization, organization, insect and disease issues, sanitation, and overall plant growth, health, and appearance. Take necessary actions to ensure growth of highest quality. Removing substandard or diseased plants to maintain quality standards.
• Determines rates of fertilizers as required by the crops and applies and/or directs the application of them.
• Develops growing procedures for new species in product line and new cultivation techniques.
• Maintains inventory of needed growing supplies such as fertilizers, substrate, carbon dioxide supplementation and seeds.
• Maintains records of growing techniques and production; reviews records and reports to identify trends and to forecast future space and production needs.
• Schedules staff and assigns work; maintains personnel records and provides input into performance evaluations.
• Trains employees in growing techniques and activities.
• Maintains a current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies.
• Continually look at new equipment, technology, processes, and ideas to reduce waste and improve efficiency in the Growing Department and the nursery. Report quarterly on successes in this area.
• Assists the General Manager with other duties as assigned.

Skills & Requirements:
• Degree in horticulture
• 4 years’ experience in horticultural industry
• Strong management, delegation, planning and leadership skills.
• Demonstrated initiative and self-direction
• Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, striving for individual as well as team success
• Good attention to detail
• Flexibility and the ability to pitch in when and where needed
• Strong communication, leadership, integration, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to participate in continuous improvement processes
• Results-oriented individual with the ability to interpret and effectively manage multiple and competing priorities and time lines.
• Must have the ability to diagnose crop needs and requirements, and act in a timely and correct manner to address all situations.
• Must be knowledgeable in nutrient management programs for assigned crops, diseases and pest control, ventilation, and in general monitoring the health of the plants under his/her direction.
• Must be able to work as a member of the farms management team, and provide positive input in all growing decisions
